If you are a frequent traveller by Mumbai local trains, don't be scared if you come across Batman. He is just there to save the day, or night rather, and teach 'criminals' a lesson. The 'Batmen' are part of the 'Batman Squad,' a team set up by the Western Railway's Mumbai division to conduct ticket checks at night.?
The term Batman in the Batman Squad stands for 'Be Aware TTE Manning At Night.'?
Their job is to check tickets on local trains after 8 pm, as ticket inspectors are usually not around at that time.?
The campaign started on March 11 when the squad began patrolling at night.?
Besides checking tickets, the Batman team also watches over activities at stations during the night.?
This is mainly to ensure the safety of women passengers, as ticket inspectors will now check tickets in the women's coach.?
Since the campaign began, about 2,500 passengers without tickets have faced consequences, resulting in a revenue gain of around Rs 6.50 lakh.?
Every day, thousands of individuals commute on Mumbai's suburban trains without purchasing tickets.?
In fact, between April 2022 and February 2023, the Mumbai division of Central Railways had collected an astounding Rs 100 crore from 18 lakh ticketless passengers.?
This is a substantial increase from the revenue collected in 2019-20, which amounted to Rs 76.82 crore from 15.73 lakh passengers.?
Following numerous complaints on social media from passengers who buy tickets at increased prices but face significant challenges due to overcrowding caused by ticketless travelers, the Batman Squad was established.?
In related news, several railway stations in Mumbai have undergone name changes recently, including Marine Lines being renamed Mumbadevi, Cotton Green as Kalachowki, and King's Circle now identified as Tirthakar Parshivnath, among others.? ? ?
