The Centre and the CBSE informed the Supreme Court that they have decided to cancel the Class X and XII examinations scheduled from July 1-15 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and they would be conducted later.
The CBSE will not conduct the class 10th examination while the students of Class 12th will be given an option of appearing in exams after conditions are conducive. Class XII students will get an option to appear in exams or take the assessment based on the past three exams, a bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar was apprised by the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The top court was also informed that the students will have the liberty to opt either for the examinations, to be conducted later, or go with the assessment process based on past performance.
The court was hearing pleas seeking scrapping of remaining exams of Class XII scheduled from July 1-15 in view of the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.
The parents claimed if students were to appear for the examination, amid the ongoing coronavirus, then their health safety would be compromised.?
The petitioners urged the apex court to direct?CBSE to declare the results?on the basis of examination already conducted and to calculate it on an average basis with the internal assessment marks of the remaining subject, and also stay the decision to commence the examination from July 1.
The parents had said in the plea that the board students could be exposed to COVID-19 infection if they appear for exams amid the rising number of coronavirus cases in India.?
Last week, the SC had given the CBSE one week time to decide on the matter.
On Thursday, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), through its counsel Jaideep Gupta, also informed the court that it will also cancel the class 10 and 12 board exams. However, it submitted that it does not agree to give the option to students to give the exam later.
