A man who was under trial for over seven years for a crime of which he was innocent, has been awarded a compensation of Rs 15 lakh by a Chennai court.?
Santosh won the suit against a woman who had falsely claimed that he had raped her and made her pregnant. But a DNA test confirmed that Santosh is not the child's father.?
Santosh said his parents had arranged for him to get married to the woman, but their ties went bad due to a property dispute. Later, her mother told his parents that he had impregnated her daughter and wanted their marriage.?
When Santosh denied it, she and her family accused him of rape. Police arrested him as a result. The court remanded him to judicial custody for 95 days. He was released on bail in 2010, TOI reported.?
By then the baby was born, it was a girl. Her DNA test proved that Santosh could not be her biological father. The trial lasted nearly 7 years and then a Mahila Court acquitted him in 2016.?
After that, Santosh filed a compensation suit against the woman and her family. He sought Rs 30 lakh. The court awarded him Rs 15 lakh payable by the woman and her parents.
