Chhattisgarh state police force has recruited 13 transgender officers according to an official as per a report in AFP.??
The Supreme Court recognised transgenders in India back in 2014.
They will join just two other known transgender officers serving on the force.?
"We have recruited transgender people as constables for the first time and I personally congratulate them," Chhattisgarh senior police official DM Awasthi said while speaking to the press.?
Tamil Nadu was the first state to recruit a transgender in 2017.?
But the community still has its share of challenges. Several leave home or are forced out and get involved in prostitution and begging.
Recently, many initiatives by the government have been launched and the move to bring them in the police force is part of that plan.
Bihar earlier this year declared one transgender would be taken for every 500 recruits in its police force.
A good move indeed and the nation is headed in the right direction.
India is progressing.?
