As people across the country demand ease of relaxation so that they can go about doing regular activities, the threat from the novel coronavirus is ever-increasing.
After liquor shops were allowed to open across the country, people, keeping aside social distancing norms, thronged to liquor stores in hundreds and thousands.
The last 24 hours India has added 2,958 new cases, taking the total tally to 49,436. With 126 more people having lost their lives to the infection, the country's death toll at present is 1,695, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.Even with such alarming spike, India is set to bring back around 250,000 citizens from across the world, which might take the number much higher.
Maharashtra, the most affected state in India, now has 15,525 corona cases, with an addition of 986 on May 5. Tamil Nadu, which recently witnessed a sudden surge in the number of cases, now has 4,058 cases.
Punjab also emerged as a cause of concern as the city witnessed a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in the last few days.?
Just yesterday, the state added more than 200 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total count in Punjab to 1,451.
Union health minister Harsh Vardhan hoped that "behavioural changes" brought about by the infection could become the "new normal" for a healthy society after the pandemic abates.
India is currently in the third phase of lockdown as the Centre gave some relaxations to restart the economy which had come to a standstill due to the pandemic.
