A hospital in Durgapur, West Bengal recently witnessed an unusual event - a wedding.
The couple, Amit Mukherjee and Sucharita Patra began the new chapter of their life together from the hospital bed after the bride fell ill.
Noida-based Mukherjee, who is working as an engineer and Patra who was working in Delhi as a microbiologist had been in a relationship for years.
The couple had decided to get married some two years ago and the date was fixed for March 2, 2024.
As preparations were in full swing at her home for the marriage, on Thursday Patra complained of stomach pain after which she was taken to the Life Care Hospital in Durgapur, The Times of India reported.
At the hospital, the doctors diagnosed her with viral hepatitis, which needed hospitalisation.
By this time the groom and his relatives were already in Durgapur since the wedding date was fixed two years ago, they didn't want to miss it.
So the families asked the doctors if Patra could be taken out in an ambulance for an hour and brought back after the rituals.
The doctors, instead sought permission from the hospital management to hold the wedding inside the ward itself.?
With the green light from the hospital management, the wedding was back on track again, and on Saturday at 7:30 pm the couple tied the knot on the hospital bed in front of family, friends, doctors, and other medical staff.
The next day, the groom's kin left for Noida, while he stayed back. According to the bride's family, the couple will soon return to Noida once Patra is discharged from the hospital.
The family also thanked the hospital for allowing the wedding to take place.
¡°We are extremely thankful to the hospital authorities for allowing the wedding to happen inside the hospital. This is not something that happens usually but they went against their norms and allowed us to conduct the rituals inside the ward,¡± Subrata Kumar Patra, the father of the bride, told The Times of India.
