We are living in a time when myths are freely propagated as "well proven" theories of science. There may be some tried and tested methods which are not accepted by science, but some people tend to go too far with their beliefs.
In what could be seen as yet another such case, the Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) Ministry is seriously working on using cow urine for preparation of medicines and treatment of cancer.?
According to Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey many medicines, including those which cure cancer, are prepared from cow urine and hence the Indian government has prepared a scheme for the conservation of Indian cows.
"Cow urine is used in the preparation of several types of medicines. It is used even for the treatment of incurable disease like cancer. The urine of the indigenous variety of cow is often used. The Ministry of AYUSH is seriously working on it," said Ashwini Kumar Choubey.
While it has been a long-held belief that the urine of Indian cows has medicinal properties, nothing has been scientifically proven yet.?
It has been found that cow urine is rich in minerals like sodium, potassium, creatinine, phosphorus, and epithelial cells, none of these has any anti-cancer effects.?

In fact, scientists and oncologists have repeatedly warned against taking such claims seriously and risking the lives of cancer victims.
This is not the first time cow-related myths have been propagated as science in India. The most famous case being "cow is the only animal that inhales and exhales oxygen" a claim that has been rejected by the scientific community. Others include, rubbing on cows body can reduce high blood pressures, cow dung can resist radiation etc.?
There is also another claim, which is making rounds about the presence of gold in cow urine, which also has not been proven yet.
Recently, during the Lok Sabha Election campaign, then BJP candidate from Bhopal, Pragya Singh Thakur had claimed that her cancer was cured by consuming a mix of five different cow products.?
However, Dr. SS Rajput a cardiovascular surgeon at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow rejected the claims and said that he had operated Pragya first in 2008 at the Mumbai¡¯s JJ Hospital when she had developed a tumor in the right breast. She was operated once again in 2012 after the tumor recurred.
