A 37-year-old Dalit man was tied to a pillar, thrashed and forced to drink urine in Punjab¡¯s Sangrur district over an old dispute.
The man has been identified as a resident of Changaliwala village. He had a dispute with one Rinku and some other persons. He told police that on November 7, Rinku called him to his house where he talked about the matter.
The man alleged that he was later thrashed by four people after being tied to a pillar and when he asked for water, he was forced to drink urine.
Police said four persons have been booked for abduction, wrongful confinement, and under various sections of the IPC, and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at the Lehra police station.
News agency PTI reported that Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has also sought a report from Senior Superintendent of Police, Sangrur over the incident.
In a statement, Chairperson Tejinder Kaur said the commission learnt about the incident through media reports and took suo motu cognisance and sought the report.
In early November, a 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten up by four men from a backwards community for dropping dishes at an eatery in Sabarmati area of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
According to a complaint filed with the police, Pragnesh Parmar was hit by Mahesh Thakor, Jogi Thakor and two others when he went to Mahesh's eatery for dinner and accidentally dropped a dish, said Inspector RH Vala of Sabarmati police station, said a report by news agency PTI.
In yet another shocking incident, a group of Dalit men had to carry the body of one of their community members through sewers and garbage dump after they were refused to used road for the funeral procession.
The incident occurred in Vilankurichi in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The appalling incident of caste discrimination came to fore after a video surfaced online. The video shows men carrying the body of 73-year-old Pappamal after being denied access to a proper road for the funeral.
Dalits in the area are not allowed to use the Karl Marx Nagar-Gandhi Nagar road to commute because the road is used by upper caste members.
In September, two Dalit children were killed for defecating in the open.
