This is not the first time Rajasthan has made headlines for mob lynchings. In the past couple of years, there have been a number of incidents when people were beaten to death by mobs in Rajasthan, in most of the case for transporting cows.
The most high profile incident happened in Alwar in 2017, when Pehlu Khan and his two sons, who were residents of Haryana were transporting cows that they had bought from Jaipur. The cattle farmer was confronted by gau rakshaks who accused them of trafficking the cows for slaughter. Despite clarifying that they were cattle farmers and the cows were meant for milking Khan was mercilessly beaten on the road, and later died of his injuries.?
Last year, in yet another similar incident, Rakbar Khan, another resident of Haryana was beaten up in Alwar by a mob of cow vigilantes. He was attacked on suspicion of cow smuggling. He was taken into custody by the police and later died of his injuries.
