In a tragic incident, a father-son duo who was on their way to celebrate Diwali with family died in an explosion Kottakuppam in Villupuram district, near the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border on Thursday.
Kalainesan, a native of Ariyankuppam in Puducherry, and his seven-year-old son Pradeesh were on their way to his in-law's house in Koonimedu in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu when the two-wheeler they were traveling was shattered due to an explosion, killing them on the spot.
Two other bikers were also injured in the powerful explosion in the middle of the road in Kottakuppam.
Kalainesan had bought two bags of country-made firecrackers to celebrate Diwali with his family in Tamil Nadu.
It is still unclear what caused the firecrackers to explode. It is assumed that one of the bags could have accidentally ignited from friction or overheating, causing the massive explosion.
The blast was so powerful, that their bodies were torn into several pieces and were scattered a few metres away.
The entire incident was caught on a CCTV camera.
Ariyankuppam in Puducherry is known for its firecrackers manufacturing units.
There are several big and small firecrackers manufacturers in Ariyankuppam, and many of them are unregistered and do not have valid licenses.
Explosions at such illegal factories and storehouses are not uncommon in Ariyankuppam.
