A 25-year-old woman constable from Maharashtra Police has requested authorities to allow her to undergo gender reassignment surgery. According to Deccan Chronicle, the constable who is currently posted in Beed Majalgaon police station has sought the permission from SP Beed, which is currently pending.

SP Beed, G Sreedhar who confirmed the development to the newspaper said, "We have forwarded the application to the DGP¡¯s office."
Asked if she would able to continue her service after she gets permission for the surgery, Sreedhar said, ¡°The final call will be taken by a superior authority. There is no such rule or law about such matters.¡±
The woman constable said, ¡°I thought I wouldn¡¯t be able to afford sex change surgery so I approached the JJ Hospital. After talking to doctors there, I was happy to learn that it could be done. I have taken a call to go with this surgery.¡±

Earlier this year the CISF had recognised as male a woman constable who underwent surgery to change her sex. The 29-year-old had gone under the knife to marry a woman colleague as same-sex marriages are still illegal in India.
After six years of legal battle, the CISF in this February after medical examinations decided to clear the officer as a male.
In another similar case, the Indian Navy had terminated the service of an officer for undergoing Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) to become a woman.?
