In one of the biggest job cuts in the tech industry's history, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, let go of around 11,000 employees.
This includes some who were just recruited and others who had been with the company for nearly a decade.
Pragya Singh, a technical source for Meta in Gurugram who had joined the company only six months ago, has been hit by the mass layoffs.
She wrote 'Impacted by recent layoff' on her LinkedIn bio. Some other fired employees from India also posted their ordeal on LinkedIn, who joined the company just days or some months ago.
Sasikala Satheesh, also impacted by Meta layoffs, posted: "Unlike every other day, today I woke up with shocking news that me and my team is impacted among 11K Metamates who got laid off."
Many Indian techies working for Meta in the US are also among those who have been shown the door.
And that has left them in a tight spot as they were in the US on a work visa.
The H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US-based companies to employ foreign workers for a period of time, typically three to six years.
H1B visa holders only have a grace period of 60 days from a job termination to finding a new one.
Many who have lost their jobs have posted on social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, seeking help to find a job before time runs out.
"Unfortunately, I'm one of the 11k employees impacted by mass layoffs at Meta/Facebook today. I'm reaching out to my network here for any opportunities for Backend Software Engineering (Product/Infra) roles.?I've around 8 years of experience in the area and have previously worked at Microsoft, Amazon, Bank of America and until now, Meta.?I'm on an H1-B visa and hence, on a very tight timeline to find my next job," Eshita Bhedaa wrote on LinkedIn.
"The unfortunate happened when 11000 people were laid off from #meta this morning. It is an extremely devastating news. Working with #meta and my #metamates has been really enlightening and a great learning experience.?Starting now I am actively looking for jobs as I am on work visa H1b. I would appreciate any help or any roles that are fully remote or in the greater Seattle area," Twinkle Sharma stated.
"Layoff comes with a deadline for employees like me on an H1B visa, and I have around 60 days to find a new role in the United States. I have 10+ years of experience in product management, strategy, and marketing space," another user, Richa Srivastava said.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that the company will provide immigration support to those who lost their jobs.
"I know this is especially difficult if you're here on a visa. There's a notice period before termination and some visa grace periods, which means everyone will have time to make plans and work through their immigration status. We have dedicated immigration specialists to help guide you based on what you and your family need," Zuckerberg said.
