Goa is one of India's top holiday destinations, with its buzzing beaches and nightlife. However, with an increase in popularity comes an influx of tourists which invites problems of its own. Recently, because of issues caused by tourists driving rented bikes and cars recklessly, the Goa government has made a new rule according to which all tourists have to sign an undertaking to follow traffic rules before they rent a vehicle.?
According to Traffic SP Rahul Gupta, statistics indicate that rented cars and bikes are twice as likely to be involved in accidents.?
Therefore, the Goa police now requires people to sign a promise when renting vehicles in the state.?
There are two separate undertakings, one for renting cars and another for renting bikes.?
The undertaking includes provisions such as:?
"I appeal to all incoming tourists and rental agencies that they scrupulously follow this and cooperate with Goa police because this measure is being taken for the safety of all and to promote Goa tourism in a bigger way. If traffic accidents go down, particularly for tourists, then there will be a significant boost to tourism in the long term," said Gupta.?
Just last month, the state government started making rules stricter for rented vehicles. They made it necessary for rental cars to have speed governors installed.?
The undertaking, police believe, will have a psychological impact on those renting vehicles and will serve as a greater measure besides just issuing challans for traffic violations.?
If anyone is found without the undertaking, the Goa police could cancel their licence.
