In 2014, Supreme Court declared transgender people as 3rd gender and ruled that they have equal privilege over the fundamental rights. According to estimates, there are more than 3,000 transgenders in Chhattisgarh and falls under the other backward class (OBC) category.
While Chhattisgarh have become the first state to officially recruit transgenders in its police ranks, isolated cases like Prithika Yashini from Tamil Nadu have already been wearing the uniform.
In the case of Yashni who is currently serving as a Sub-inspector in Tamil Nadu police, she had to fight a long legal battle to get her recruitment cleared.
