India has recorded yet another grim milestone as the country struggles to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Saturday, the Union Health Ministry has said that the total number of confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in India has surpassed the 100,000 mark.
With an increase of 1,069 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the COVID-19 fatalities in the country now stand at 1,00,842.
India is only the third country in the world after the US and Brazil to have more than 100,000 deaths from the virus.
India has been reporting more than 1,000 daily deaths for over a month now, which accounts 15-25 per cent of global deaths daily.?
India's COVID-19 case fatality rate was recorded at 1.56 per cent.
In India, Maharashtra which is the worst COVID-19 affected state also has the highest death toll from the infection.
Maharashtra has so far seen 37,480 COVID-19 deaths, followed by 9,653 in Tamil Nadu and 9,119 in Karnataka.
As far as cities are concerned, Mumbai has the highest COVID-19 death toll at 9,014 followed by 5,904 in Pune and 5,438 in Delhi.
The total coronavirus cases mounted to 64,73,544 with 79,476 new infections being reported in a day.
The total recoveries have surged to 54,27,706, while there are 9,44,996 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which comprises 14.60 per cent of the total caseload.
India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16 and crossed 60 lakh on September 28.
