In a horrifying hit-and-run incident amid dense fog in Delhi-NCR, a victim was struck by multiple cars on NH9, resulting in the body being severely mutilated and fingers severed from the palm.
The incident occurred on Monday night near Ghaziabad's Wave City area, where the victim became virtually invisible to motorists due to the thick fog blanketing the region, as per TOI. Police are currently working to identify the victim by examining over 16 hours of CCTV footage from cameras installed near the scene.
The body was discovered by commuters who noticed blood on the road and alerted the police around 10 am on Monday, according to ACP Wave City Saloni Agrawal.
A report in Hindustan Times quoted police as saying that the incident occurred Sadbhawna crossing near Dasna, and by the time the cops were alerted and reached the spot, the body was mutilated beyond recognition and parts were scattered across the carriageway.
¡°Police and NHAI quick response teams took an hour to find the severely mangled parts of the body. We found some tattered cloth pieces, blood and some bones along with a few fingers. It is still unclear if the deceased was a man or woman,¡± the ACP was further quoted.
Police teams are visiting nearby villages and colonies in an effort to identify the body, checking missing complaint reports as well.
Sub-inspector Bhanu Pratap Singh mentioned that the dense fog made it challenging to discern anything from the highway cameras, and the suspect vehicle involved in the hit-and-run could not be identified.
The National Highways Authority of India estimates that the NH-9 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in Ghaziabad witness about 2,00,000 daily passenger car units.
The NHAI has filed a complaint in the hit-and-run incident, leading to an FIR against unknown persons under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (death by negligence).
The dense fog on Monday caused the NCR to experience the worst fog of the season, resulting in flight cancellations at IGI airport. According to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) report, visibility in Delhi-NCR dropped to 50 meters at 2:30 am on Monday, further decreasing to zero meters around 3 am.
