At a time when India needs them the most, an increasing number of doctors and other health care workers are also falling victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Karnataka, ever since the second wave struck, three doctors have succumbed to the virus.
Dr. Ramegowda, the founder and head of Rashi Diagnostic Centre, died on Thursday after contracting the virus.
Dr. GN Ganesh Kumar, who was working as a medical officer in a general hospital in Kollegal taluk, died two days before that, on Tuesday.
Dr. Mahesh, a paediatrician from Ramanagar died on April 18.
The Times of India, quoting colleagues of the deceased doctors said that all three of them had taken at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
This is not an isolated case, across the country the second wave of the pandemic is claiming the lives of more doctors.
According to the data released by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday, in April alone at least 34 doctors have died in India due to COVID-19.
Indiatimes?has however identified at least three more deaths among doctors since the IMA released its data.
5 doctors had died in Bihar and Maharashtra in April while 4 had died in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
In February this year, the IMA had said that from the start of the pandemic till then 734 doctors had died in India due to COVID-19.
Last month a Rs 50 lakh insurance for medical professionals who die on Covid-19 duty was cancelled.
According to the government, the scheme had ended on April 24 and is in talks with an insurance company to come up with a new policy.
