On Sunday morning, Sadanandan Oliparambil left his house in Kudayampadi village of Kottayam to buy some meat.
But since he did not have change for Rs 500, he bought a Christmas New Year Bumper from his friend and lottery agent Selvakumar.
The 77-year-old who has been buying lotteries for a long time went home with his ticket and some meat he had purchased.
Just a few hours later at 3 PM when the Christmas New Year Bumper lottery result was announced Sadanandan was in for the shock of his life.
The lottery which he has bought just a few hours ago was the winning ticket XG 21858.
The Christmas New Year Bumper lottery of the Kerala government has the first prize of Rs 12 crore, followed by a second prize of Rs 50 lakh each for six persons and the third prize of Rs 10 lakh (six persons). The fourth prize of Rs 5 lakh will be given to six persons.
Sadanandan who has been working as a painter for more than fifty years will get around Rs 7.39 crore after the deduction of relevant taxes and the commission of the lottery agent.
Calling his fortune God's blessing, Sadanandan who lives in a small house with his wife and two children said he will use part of the money to pay off some debts and arrange better living conditions for his children.
The Kerala Lottery Department had sold more than 47 lakh tickets, with one costing Rs 300.
Last year the lucky draw of the Thiruvonam Bumper which also had a Rs 12 crore prize had landed in controversy in Kerala.
This was after an NRI man working in Dubai claimed that he had bought the winning ticket.
Saithalavi, a native of Panamarm in Wayanad District had said that?he had bought the ticket through a friend?and claimed that he had the photo of the winning ticket.
However, his friend who supposedly bought the ticket for Saithalavi claimed ignorance and said that he only forwarded a photo of the winning lottery to his friend.
Saithalavi then accused his friend of cheating and even threatened to file a case against him.
In the meantime, another man from Kochi surfaced claiming that he was the real winner.
Unlike Saithalavi, Jayaplan, an auto driver from Kochi said he was the winner and even claimed that he had submitted the winning ticket in a bank.
After it became clear that Jayaplan, was the real winner, Saithalavi admitted that he made up the entire thing for fun, but didn't expect it to get the traction it got.
