However, a man in Tamil Nadu has not been so?lucky. While participating in an idli-eating competition in Pandikudi village, S Chinnathambi died after choking on his 12th piece. The Bharathiyar Youth Association in Pandikudi came up with the idli eating competition idea this year after their bitter gourd and green chilly competitions failed to gain enough participants, reported The New Indian Express.
Participants had to eat as many idlis as they could in three minutes without drinking water in between. Chinnathambi, who was a cook by profession passed away on Tuesday evening during an event organised as part of the Kaanum Pongal celebration. Villages in the state of Tamil Nadu almost consider this a ritual to conduct amateur sporting events on the festival of Pongal.

The 42-year-old a resident of the village, enthusiastically participated in the competition alongside nine others and were cheered by onlookers. However, when Chinnathambi collapsed after eating his 12th idli, the enthused crowd became serious and stopped into a pin drop silence. Chinnathambi had died before the ambulance even arrived.
