Getting the right treatment at the right time can at times be the difference between life and death. One of the key factors to get a timely treatment is to take the patient to the hospital at the earliest.
But unfortunately, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have come across any number of horror stories where patients including those in critical conditions had to wait for hours for an ambulance to take them to the hospital.
While some still make it to the hospital, many others have lost their lives, waiting for an ambulance.
Shiju Shaij, a native of Alappuzha in Kerala realised the importance of an ambulance last week when his family was trying to take his grandmother to a hospital.
Shiju's 95-year-old grandmother was complaining of chest pain and despite their attempts to contact several hospitals and ambulance providers, they couldn't get one.
Finally, the family took her to the hospital in a car, but it was too late and the 95-year-old had lost her life.
Following her death, Shiju felt that no one else should go through what he and his family went through.
That is how he came up with the idea of starting an ambulance service.
Shiju who has already purchased an ambulance?told local media?that he intends to provide free of cost service to those who cannot afford to pay.
While the ambulance shortage has been a long-standing issue in the country, even in big cities, the COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation even worse.
Though several states are ramping up their fleet to meet the demands due to COVID-19, it often falls short.
Many ambulance drivers are also forced to work more than 12 hours a day due to the high number of patients.
