Within two days of allowing liquor shops and non-essential shops to open in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on May 5 decided to revoke the decision.
BMC said that decision was taken after people did not maintain social distancing and the law and order situation was threatened during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.
Now, only grocery stores and medical shops will be allowed to operate. In an order issued in the night, the BMC said only groceries, medical stores and chemist shops will be allowed to remain open in the city from May 6.
In the order, the BMC expressed fear that allowing some non-essential services may lead to deterioration of the coronavirus situation in Mumbai.
Highlighting the reason, the BMC said it has been observed that the number of positive cases in Mumbai has been rising and the downward trend is yet to set in.
On May 5, Mumbai reported 635 new cases of Covid-19, taking the total number of cases in the city to 9,758, Municipal Corporation Greater Mumbai said.
Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 841 new COVID-19 cases and 34 deaths, taking the overall case count to 15,525 and the number of fatalities to 617 so far, a Health department official said.
Additionally, Mumbai Police announced that Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in the city till May 17, when the nationwide lockdown is expected to be lifted.?
In Pune, police have? registered cases against nine liquor shops across the city in connection with not following MHA's guidelines.?
