Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman equaled the record of former Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai as she presented her sixth successive budget on Thursday.
As Union Finance Minister, Sitharaman has presented five annual budgets and one interim budget.
Desai, who was finance minister, before he became the Prime Minister, had presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964.
Desai also has the distinction of presenting six Budgets in a row, and has presented a total of ten Union Budgets, the highest for any Finance Minister.
On Thursday, Sitharaman surpassed the records of former finance ministers like Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, who had presented five Union Budgets each.
The first interim Budget of independent India was presented by the then Finance Minister RK Shanmukham Chetty on November 26, 1947. C D Deshmukh presented the interim Budget in 1952, TT Krishnamachari in 1957.
Sitharaman also joins her predecessors like Singh as finance ministers who have presented interim budgets.
Manmohan Singh presented the interim budget in 1996, Yashwant Sinha in 1991, R Venkataraman in 1980, H M Patel in 1977, and Y B Chavan in 1971.
