A shocking video has emerged on social media showing a ride elephant attacking a female tourist in Rajasthan's Amer Fort.
According to reports, the tourist, a Russian national was left with a fractured leg after she was flung into the air by the ride elephant, Gouri.
Two others have also reportedly been injured in the angry outburst by the elephant.
In the video released by PETA, Gouri also known as Elephant Number 86 can be seen violently swinging the female tourist, while another person seated on the jumbo also falls down.
PETA also pointed out that this is not the first time Gouri has turned violent and attacked humans.
The animal rights group has also appealed to the state government to end elephant rides at Amer Fort and replace them with eco-friendly vehicles.
Over the years, elephant rides have become an integral part of a trip to the Amer fort in Jaipur.?
But animal rights groups have long alleged that the more than 80 captive elephants used as ride animals are overworked and abused by their mahouts.
They also point out that these elephants which are not native to Rajasthan are forced to make several trips up and down the fort daily carrying tourists in temperatures above 40 degrees.
In 2021, PET had released the concept design of a chariot that can be used for rides at the fort, instead of elephants.?
PETA said the electric vehicle, suggested to be named ¡°Maharaja¡±, resembles a royal chariot. The vehicle could ferry four tourists per trip and would be suitable for hilly terrain like that at Amer Fort.
Located in Amer, 11 kilometres from Jaipur on a hill the Amer fort also known as the Amber Palace which dates back to the 16th century is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Rajasthan capital. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.?
