A 32-year-old woman, who works as a waitress at a Bhiwandi dance bar was arrested on Saturday for allegedly selling her 13-year-old daughter for Rs 1 lakh. The accused lives with her two daughters and husband.?
"The family recently shifted from Bihar to Thane. They have been facing a financial crisis and hence she decided to sell one of her daughters. When we came to know about it, we sent a decoy customer and called the woman. She got her 13-year-old daughter along and the money was handed over to her. As soon as she accepted the money, we nabbed her," said Ravindra Daundkar, senior inspector from anti-human trafficking cell. The woman's other daughter is eight years old.
"Her daughters were staying with their maternal grandmother. Two months ago, she called them back. The two girls are from the woman's previous husband, who had died a few years ago. The woman's husband said he wasn't aware of any sell-off," said sub-inspector Kalyani Patil. The accused has been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act.
