On Tuesday, the Supreme Court concluded a contempt case against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna by accepting their apologies. They were cautioned against any future violations of court orders.
This closure comes after a directive from the Delhi High Court in July 2024, which mandated them to withdraw false assertions that their product, Coronil, could cure COVID-19 and to stop blaming COVID-19 deaths on allopathic doctors.
The case originated from a 2021 lawsuit filed by doctors' associations, accusing Ramdev and his associate of misleadingly promoting Coronil as a treatment for COVID-19.
The resolution of this legal matter shines a spotlight on the two central figures involved, Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, each with their own distinct contributions to the Patanjali empire. Let's take a look into their lives:
Acharya Balkrishna, born on August 4, 1972, in Haridwar, India, to Nepalese immigrants, Sumitra Devi and Jay Vallabh Subedi, spent his early years in Nepal before moving back to India.
He attended Khanpur Gurukul in Haryana, where he first met Ramdev. Together with Baba Ramdev and Acharya Karamveer, he founded the Divya Yoga Mandir Trust on January 5, 1995, located at Haridwar¡¯s Kripalu Bagh Ashram.
?In 2006, the trio established Patanjali Ayurved, which grew rapidly with support from followers Sunita and Sarwan Poddar.
By 2020, Patanjali Ayurved¡¯s revenue reached approximately Rs 9,022.71 crore. Balkrishna owns a 94% stake in Patanjali Ayurved and, as reported by Forbes, has an estimated net worth of $3.4 billion.
Unlike Balkrishna, Baba Ramdev does not hold any shares in Patanjali Ayurved but serves as the public face of the company.
Baba Ramdev, originally named Ram Kisan Yadav, was born on December 25, 1965, in Haryana, India. He is a well-known yoga guru and entrepreneur who has played a significant role in popularizing yoga and Ayurveda.
Since 2002, his yoga camps have been televised, reaching a wide audience. Ramdev¡¯s academic background includes studies in Sanskrit, Hindu philosophy, and yoga at various gurukulas.
?In 1995, he co-founded the Divya Yoga Mandir Trust in Haridwar, which soon became a hub for yoga enthusiasts and also housed an Ayurvedic pharmacy.
