Municipal authorities in Hyderabad on Friday sealed a five-star hotel owned by the Tata Group after it defaulted on property tax payments. The Taj Hotel in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, was seized by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) over non-payment of property tax amounting to Rs 1.43 crore.
GHMC officials said the management of Taj Banjara had not paid the property tax for two years and, despite several notices, failed to clear the dues.
On Friday, GHMC officials seized the building located on Road Number 3, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
The crackdown seemed to have worked, as the Taj Banjara management paid the dues partially and promised to clear the remaining amount soon.
On Friday, Rs 55 lakh was paid by the management, which assured that the outstanding amount would be paid by March 10.
Taj Banjara is part of Taj Hotels, a subsidiary of the Indian Hotels Company Limited under the Tata Group. Taj has over 250 hotels across the globe, of which around 80 are in India.
According to its annual report, during the FY 2023-24, Taj Hotels had a revenue of Rs 410.88 crore.
