Forest officials in Odisha have confirmed that a Royal Bengal Tiger has been sighted in the Sundargarh district.
According to the forest officials, the tiger was caught on camera trap in the Toda Reserve Forest under the Bonai Division of Sundargarh.?
This is the first time in over two decades the presence of a tiger has been confirmed in the area.
Though there have been reports of a tiger in the area this was the first time it was caught on camera trap.
What makes the tiger's presence in Sundargarh even more interesting is the fact that it came all the way from Madhya Pradesh.
According to Forest Officials, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has confirmed that the big cat came from the Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.
The NTCA has matched the stripes of the tiger caught on camera trap with a big cat from Sanjay Dubri, recorded in its database.
This would mean that the tiger could have crossed over 1000 kms across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh before establishing its new territory in Odisha.
ˇ°Happy to share that one Tiger has been camera trapped in Sundergarh district almost after two decades. The Tiger cell of NTCA confirmed it to have migrated out of Sanjay Dubri TR. Must have travelled a few hundred miles to carve out its new territory in Odisha. Welcome,ˇ± PCCF (Wildlife), Susant Nanda said on X.
ˇ°We had signs of its presence. But we are convinced only after it was camera-trapped and confirmed by the tiger cell of the NTCA that it has migrated from the Central India landscape. Since it covered so many locations, it must have walked over 1000 kilometres. However, the aerial distance between Sanjay Dubri TR, its previous location and its present location is 570 kilometres. After covering over 1000 kilometres, it has reached here to establish a new territory,ˇ± he said.
