Even as the country continues to mourn the tragedy in Gujarat's Morbi that killed more than 130 people, a video has emerged from Karnataka showing some tourists attempting to drive a car onto a hanging bridge.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at Shivapura hanging bridge in Yellapura town in Uttara Kannada district.
In a video that has since gone viral, tourists can be seen trying to cross the narrow hanging bridge with Maruti Suzuki 800.
But they were stopped mid-way by some locals. In the video, the car's occupants can be seen arguing with the locals.
They were forced to retreat as the locals stood their ground and insisted that the tourists won't be allowed to drive their car on the bridge.
According to reports, the bridge was constructed in 2015 and is used by the residents of Joida and Yellapur taluks in the district. It also attracts a large number of tourists who visit the Sathodi waterfalls.
The bridge has been used by pedestrians and two-wheeler riders and is not meant for heavier vehicles, including cars.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the tragedy in Morbi is continuing, and initial reports have pointed at lapses by the company that carried out the renovation works.
According to The Times of India, the contractor had just painted and polished all the cables ahead of the bridge being reopened to the public on October 26.
Oreva Group, which was given the contract to renovate the bridge, reportedly got the work done by sub-contracting it.
Another factor that led to the collapse was a large number of people on the bridge, which exceeded its capacity.
A total of nine people, including the managers, ticketing staff and security guards, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
On Wednesday, two lawyers' bodies in Gujarat announced they would not represent the accused in the case.
This morning, the Morbi Bar Association and Rajkot Bar Association passed a resolution saying they will not represent the nine men.
