The United States has revealed that a large group of immigrants who were staying in the country illegally have been deported. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the Indian nationals were deported to India on a chartered flight on October 22.
In the fiscal year 2024, the DHS removed or returned over 160,000 individuals and operated more than 495 international repatriation flights to more than 145 countries, including India.
A DHS official warned potential migrants that they would face deportation if they entered the US illegally.
¡°Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal, and intending migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who proclaim otherwise,¡± Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior Homeland Security official, said.
India is one of the main countries of origin for illegal immigrants attempting to enter the US every year. A recent report said that out of the over 2.9 million illegal entry attempts recorded by the US Customs and Border Protection at borders with Mexico and Canada in the 2024 financial year, 90,415 were Indian nationals.
Among the 90,415 Indian nationals caught at the US border with Canada and Mexico, nearly half of them¡ª43,764¡ªwere from one state: Gujarat.
It should be noted that while over 90,000 illegal immigrants from India were arrested in the past year, those caught only make up a fraction of those attempting to enter the US illegally.
Most illegal immigrants from India attempt to enter the US illegally through the border with Mexico or Canada, with the help of human traffickers, often enduring inhospitable conditions and dangerous routes.
They also use what are known as donkey routes or donkey flights to create fake travel histories to blur the origins of their journey, by making lengthy stopovers in different countries before entering Canada or Mexico.
