If you truly believe in Bengaluru, now is the time to stand up and be counted. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a public notice asking citizens to file their objections, if any, to the felling of 112 trees on Jayamahal Main Road.

The notice, issued by the assistant conservator of forests and tree officer of the BBMP, says that objections by ¡°public, public institutions and people¡¯s representatives for removal of the 112 trees¡ may be registered along with valid reason and supporting documents either through e-mail acfsubdivision1bbmp@gmail.com or through phone (9480685381) within a period of 10 days.
Although the notice doesn¡¯t provide a timeframe, it says that the chief engineer, road infrastructure, BBMP, has sought permission for ¡°removal¡± of 112 trees ¡°which are coming in the way¡± of the widening of Jayamahal Road. And since the notice provides only 10 days for filing objections, it seems the government is moving at break-neck speed to axe all the trees ¡°coming in the way¡± of its resolve to build the steel flyover.

This felling of trees on Jayamahal Main Road is a prelude to the steel flyover which will result in the axing of at least 812 trees (author and professor Harini Nagendra put the figure at 2,244 in her article on Monday in Bangalore Mirror).?
It has been necessitated due to ¡°appropriate changes¡± in the steel flyover that the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) -- the executing agency for the project ¨C is effecting. A down ramp 325 m in length is supposed to come up at Jayamahal Main Road which will take traffic from Kempegowda International Airport road towards Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station.

¡°To avoid the congestion at Rajbhavan or Chalukya Circle or near Race Course Road, the BDA has decided to provide down ramps at various junctions like near Maharani College and Rajbhavan side. We have provided up and down ramp between Maharani College underpass and AG office so that traffic can use the flyover without getting stopped at Chalukya junction. We have also provided down ramp for traffic from Hebbal towards Jayamahal and at Vasanthanagar Main Road to distribute the exiting traffic,¡± said a BDA engineer.
The steel flyover project has been temporarily stayed by the National Green Tribunal, which reserved its final order in the last hearing.
