The unsealing of the late industrialist Ratan Tata's will has left many surprised after a relatively unknown man was named as the benefactor of assets worth over Rs 500 crore. Mohini Mohan Dutta, a Jamshedpur-based entrepreneur, is set to inherit nearly a third of Tata's assets.
As per Ratan Tata's will, his half-sisters, Shireen Jejeebhoy and Deanna Jejeebhoy, will receive two-thirds of the residual estate, while the remaining one-third is allocated to Dutta.
Ratan Tata's brother Jimmy Tata gets a share of his property worth Rs 50 crore, his half half-brother Noel Tata and his children do not find a mention in the will.
This residual estate includes bank deposits exceeding Rs 350 crore and proceeds from the auction of personal belongings, such as paintings and watches.
According to a report by The Economic Times, not many people, including Tata's inner circle, were aware of the late industrialist leaving such a hefty amount to Dutta.
The report, however, added that Dutta, who is now in his 80s, had a long-standing relationship with Tata.
¡°We first met in Jamshedpur at the Dealers' Hostel when Ratan Tata was 24. He helped me out and really built me up,¡± Dutta had mentioned during Tata's funeral in October.
Dutta was also an invited guest at Ratan Tata's birth anniversary at Mumbai's NCPA in December 2024.
According to the report, Dutta started his career with the Taj Group before launching his own venture, Stallion Travel Agency, which later merged with Taj Services.
Dutta's daughter worked with Tata Trusts for nearly a decade, having started her career with Taj Hotels.
The report added that while some saw him as a confidant and a trusted ally of Tata, according to longtime insiders, Dutta saw himself as the industrialist's adopted son.
Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away in a Mumbai hospital on October 10 at the age of 86.
