With the passing of Ratan Tata, the Chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, the salt-to-software conglomerate has lost its leader, who led one of India's most successful companies for decades. While N Chandrasekaran, whom Ratan Tata hand-picked in 2017 to succeed him, is the current Chairman of Tata Sons, things are much more complicated than they appear on the surface.??
That is because Ratan Tata was also the Chairman of Tata Trusts, in which the family members have a controlling stake in the Tata Group.??
Two of the largest Tata Trusts, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust (named after Ratanji Tata), hold around 52% of shares in Tata Sons. This means that the next chairman of these trusts would, by default, be the head of Tata Sons.??
Ratan Tata is survived by his family members, comprising brothers and sisters, including Simone Tata, Jimmy Tata, Noel Tata, Aloo Tata, Shireen Jejeebhoy, Deanne Jejeebhoy, Leah Tata, Maya Tata, Neville Tata, Manasi Tata, Jamset Tata, Tiana Tata, and others.??
One of them will be the next Chairman of Tata Trusts. According to reports, Noel Tata is the front-runner for the post. The 67-year-old is the son of Naval Tata, the father of Ratan Tata, from his second wife, Simone Dunoyer, a businesswoman from Switzerland.??
Unlike Jimmy Tata, who is Ratan Tata's younger brother and not involved in the family's business, their half-brother Noel is.??
Noel Tata is currently the Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Tata International Limited and has been part of the Tata Group for four decades.??
Noel Tata currently holds positions on the Boards of several Tata Group companies and is also a Trustee on the Boards of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, making him one of the most likely successors to Ratan Tata.
