In an unprecedented move, Canada on Monday named Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and other top diplomats as 'persons of interest' in connection with the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Following this, the MEA said India has decided to withdraw India's High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, and other targeted diplomats and officials as the Trudeau Government's actions endangered their safety.
However, Canada said Verma was issued a persona non grata note on Monday morning and expelled him, along with five other Indian diplomats.
Sanjay Kumar Verma had been serving as the High Commissioner of India to Canada since September 2022. Born on 28 July 1965, Verma graduated from Patna University and did his post-graduation in Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi.
Verma joined the Civil Services in 1988 as an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. According to the MEA, before being appointed as Indian High Commissioner in Canada, the 59-year-old had served at the High Commission of India in Hong Kong and the Embassies of India in the People's Republic of China, Vietnam, and Tš¹rkiye. He has also served as the Consul General of India in Milan, Italy, and as the Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Sudan.
Verma also served as Joint Secretary and later as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. Verma was serving as the Ambassador of India to Japan and the Republic of the Marshall Islands before he was made the Indian High Commissioner in Canada.??
In an interview with Globe and Mail, his first since the allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Nijjar, Verma had denied the claims and urged Canadian authorities to release evidence backing up their accusation.??
¡°There is no specific or relevant information provided in this case for us to assist them in the investigation. Where is the evidence? Where is the conclusion of the investigation? I would go a step further and say now the investigation has already been tainted. A direction has come from someone at a high level to say India or Indian agents are behind it,¡± he had said.
