A wild elephant that had accidentally fallen into a ditch and was trapped there was rescued by the Karnataka foresters and fire service department personnel.
The elephant was spotted by some villagers in Arakanahalla, near the Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
According to the locals, the tusker was struggling and it could not move due to the impact of the fall.
After being alerted by the locals a team of Forest and Fire officials reached the spot and with the help of a JCB raised the animal from the ditch.
"Rescued the tusker which had fallen accidentally near Arkanahalla, MM hills WLS. Forest frontline staff and fire department helped a lot," Yedukondalu V said on Twitter.
The tusker which is estimated to be 30 years old had fallen to the trench that was dug by local farmers to keep cattle and other wild animals away from their farms.
In April this year, in a similar incident, a female elephant was found dead in the sanctuary after it had fallen into a gorge, while searching for water.??
The Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, which is set to be declared as a tiger reserve is a home to a range of animals including tiger, elephants, leopards, chitals, honey badgers, striped hyena, wild dogs, sloth bear, grizzled and giant squirrels.
Several large herds of elephants also use it as a corridor.
Wild elephants straying into the buffer zone and beyond the reserve in search of food and water has been a reason for the increase in human-animal conflict in the region.
There have also been incidents where religious pilgrims who are travelling to the Nagamale shrine through the MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary were trampled by elephants.
