Delhi administration went on high alert on Monday as the water level in Yamuna River breached the dangerous levels mark. The water levels in the Yamuna River at Old Railway Bridge touched 205.40mtr,?which is 0.7 meters above the danger mark of 205.33 meters.
In a meeting convened on Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the government will shift people from low-lying areas to safe spots if the need arises.
"The unprecedented rain caused problems for people and Delhi's system was not able to withstand it. Every year after rainfall, some vulnerable areas are waterlogged and the water is drained out in a couple of hours. But the 153 mm of rainfall was unprecedented and an event which happened in nearly 40 years," he said.
The Delhi government issued a flood alert on Sunday following the release of a significant amount of water, totaling over one lakh cusecs, into the Yamuna River from the Hathnikund barrage by Haryana. Additionally, at 1 pm on Monday, 1,90,837 cusecs of water was released from the same barrage.
The government has identified 41,000 people who can be evacuated if the water levels in Yamuna River breach the 206 mark.
Earlier, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the government is in alert mode and is fully prepared to control the situation.
"Delhi government is on full alert.?As the water will go above 206 meters, we will start shifting people, living on the banks. The process of taking them safely to the relief camp will be started.?Earlier we were feeling that the water level would cross 205 meters on June 11, but it has crossed 205 meters today itself because more water is being released from Haryana," he told ANI.
