National capital New Delhi and adjoining cities like Noida and Gurugram woke up to a thick layer of fog on Wednesday, as a cold wave continues to grip the entire region. The thick blanket of fog also resulted in reduced visibility across NCR, with some areas recording zero visibility.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert on Wednesday for ¡®dense¡¯ to ¡®very dense¡¯ fog in Delhi. Dense fog is expected at most places in the morning, with isolated areas likely to experience very dense fog, the IMD said.
It also noted that smog or shallow to moderate fog is expected in the evening and at night in Delhi.
The dense fog conditions are expected to disrupt flight and rail operations to and from Delhi.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi issued an update on Wednesday morning stating that while flight operations were normal, some services may be affected due to the reduced visibility.
For Wednesday, the IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with a possibility of one or two spells of very light rain during the evening or night.
According to the IMD, the minimum temperatures are "appreciably above normal" by 3¡ãC to 5¡ãC in isolated areas over Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh. The predominant surface wind is expected to come from the southeast at less than 4 kmph during morning hours. Wind speed will increase to 6-8 kmph from the south in the afternoon before decreasing again in the evening.
Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi, which had improved to the poor range over the weekend due to the recent spell of rains, slipped back to very poor.
According to government data, Delhi¡¯s air quality is in the ¡®very poor¡¯ category at an AQI of 338, while air pollution levels in Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad are in the poor category.
