In a dramatic turn of events during the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Deepak Chahar found himself in an embarrassing situation when his attempt to run out Aiden Markram backfired.
The incident took place when Deepak Chahar came to bowl the fifth over of SRH's innings. Travis Head was on strike while Aiden Markram was standing at the non-striker's end as Deepak Chahar ran in to bowl the very first delivery of the over.
Just before delivering the ball, Chahar halted his action and attempted to dislodge the bails at the non-striker's end, aiming to catch Markram off-guard. However, the South African batsman was well within his crease, leaving Chahar visibly embarrassed. This is not the first time that Chahar has been involved in a Mankand moment in IPL.?
In an intense IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT), Deepak Chahar had attempted a Mankad dismissal against GT's Vijay Shankar. Chahar, in the 13th over, feigned a run-out at the non-striker's end, prompting Shankar to stay grounded within his crease.?
Despite the playful maneuver, Shankar remained unscathed as he was well within the crease. Witnessing this from behind the stumps, CSK skipper MS Dhoni couldn't contain his amusement and sported a cheeky smile.?
While the mode of dismissal is well within the rules of the game, it is widely seen as against the spirit of the game.
This mode of dismissal, commonly referred to as Mankading, has a controversial history in cricket. It originated 76 years ago when India's Vinoo Mankad executed it against Australia's Bill Brown during a Sydney Test in 1947.?
Earlier in today's game, SRH captain Pat Cummins showed remarkable sportsmanship and withdrew an appeal against Ravindra Jadeja.
The incident occurred in the 19th over of CSK's innings when a throw from Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck Jadeja's back, leading to an appeal for obstructing the field. Cummins, however, chose to withdraw the appeal.
CSK suffered their second successive loss as SRH clinched a commanding six-wicket triumph at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium as the match concluded. Pat Cummins' squad showcased a stellar bowling display, restricting CSK to 165/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite the sluggish pitch, Shivam Dube's brisk 49 and Ravindra Jadeja's brief cameo bolstered CSK's innings. In reply, Abhishek Sharma's explosive 37 off just 12 deliveries set the stage for SRH's chase, with Aiden Markram's fifty steering them to their second victory in four matches.??
