Speculation swirls around the potential participation of England cricket team fast bowler Jofra Archer in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, fueled by a viral video showcasing his prowess while playing for county side Sussex in Bengaluru.
In the clip, Archer displayed formidable form, sparking chatter on social media platforms about a possible stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the forthcoming season.?
The cricketer's Instagram post on Sunday further stoked anticipation ahead of the IPL 2024 opener against defending champions Chennai Super Kings on March 22.
Archer's recent appearance for a Karnataka team during a two-day practice match against Sussex at the KSCA Ground in Alur, near Bengaluru, added fuel to the speculation. Playing as a substitute for the Karnataka team, which comprised U-19, U-23, and senior players, Archer showcased his skills, clinching two wickets.
The Sussex squad is currently in Bengaluru for a 10-day pre-season camp. During this time, they are slated to play a couple of practice games before returning to the South Coast.
Although Sussex opted to bowl in the practice game, Archer refrained from bowling on the opening day. However, his cameo as a substitute player for Karnataka left an impression, signalling his readiness for competitive cricket.
Archer's potential IPL involvement last December was overshadowed by advice from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) urging him to manage his workload due to prior injuries. Despite expressing interest in entering the IPL 2024 players' auction, Archer opted to prioritize recovery.
The 28-year-old's last IPL stint with the Mumbai Indians in May last year was marred by an elbow injury, limiting his participation to just four matches. Subsequently, Archer has been sidelined from competitive cricket, raising concerns over his fitness ahead of the impending T20 World Cup.
Recently, Jos Buttler, England's white-ball captain, expressed optimism regarding Archer's availability for the team's T20 World Cup title defence in June. "For Jofra, we all know just what a special cricketer he is... you're always optimistic that... his body will just allow him to get back where he was," Buttler told?EuroSport, highlighting Archer's significance to the team's success.
