Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian cricketer, took to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to react to Rishabh Pant's comeback ahead of the IPL 2024 season opener for Delhi Capitals.?
Sharing a clip from the movie 'Nayak: The Real Hero', Jaffer expressed his anticipation for Pant's return to competitive cricket after a lengthy hiatus due to injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022.
Pant, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, has been sidelined for nearly a year and a half, missing crucial tournaments including the 2023 ODI World Cup and IPL 2023, due to injuries from the accident. However, following clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Pant is set to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024.
Despite Pant's exceptional batting prowess, it's unlikely that he will take on wicketkeeping duties against Punjab Kings. Avishek Porel, who filled in as wicketkeeper last season, is expected to resume the role.
Delhi's head coach, Ricky Ponting, has expressed confidence in Pant's readiness for the upcoming season. Ponting noted Pant's dedication to training, highlighting his extensive time spent batting and keeping during practice sessions. Ponting remarked, "We had a week's training in Vizag before coming here and trust me Rishabh is back and ready to play."
Speaking about Delhi Capitals' approach for IPL 2024, Pant emphasized simplicity and giving their all in every game. He stated, "Most of the conversations are pretty simple, we just want to go out there, have fun, not complicate things and give our 100% in all the games."
Last season, with Pant sidelined, David Warner captained Delhi Capitals, but the team's performance was below par, finishing second to last in the points table with just five wins from 14 league matches.
Delhi Capitals are set to play against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in an afternoon clash at Mulianpur, Chandigarh, on Saturday, March 23. In this season, Delhi Capitals will play two of their home games in Visakhapatnam, with the first match scheduled for Saturday. Fans eagerly anticipate Pant's return, hoping that his leadership and batting prowess will propel Delhi Capitals to success in IPL 2024.
