A young Ivy League graduate from an elite family, and a hero to many¡ªthis is not the average description of a murder suspect. But Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old arrested for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month, has emerged as an unlikely hero, and his 'heroism' is soon set to hit the screens.
At least four real-life crime documentaries are already in the works about Mangione, who was arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after he shot dead Thompson in New York.
The first Mangione documentary that is set to be released is "Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder ¨C A Special Edition of 20/20", which will be aired on Thursday, December 19, on US news network ABC.
According to ABC, the one-hour film takes a deep dive into a story that riveted the nation, providing a minute-by-minute investigation of the cold-blooded execution of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the shocking social media backlash that turned the alleged murderer into a folk hero for some.
Another Mangione documentary in the works is by Alex Gibney, the Oscar-winning director behind Taxi to the Dark Side. According to reports, the documentary will explore ¡°how killers are created, what this killing says about our society and the values we place on who lives and who dies.¡±
At least two more documentaries are also set to tell the story of Mangione, who has polarised opinions ever since his involvement in the high-profile murder came to light.
The murder of Thompson was met with cheers on social media, with many responding with laughing emojis on UnitedHealthcare's post paying tributes to him.
Many have also come up with crowdfunding campaigns to raise money for Mangione's defence fund.?
Several videos have also emerged on social media showing people getting tattoos of Mangione on themselves.
