A massive blast at Beirut port which destroyed entire neighbourhoods has taken over 100 lives and wounded more than 4000, the Lebanese Red Cross said according to AFP.?
"Until now over 4000 people have been injured and over 100 have lost their lives. Our teams are still conducting search and rescue operations in the surrounding areas," a statement said.?
Around 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were kept in the port warehouse which exploded, said Prime Minister Hassan Diab.?
"It is unacceptable that a shipment of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate has been present for six years in a warehouse, without taking preventive measures," he declared during a defence council meeting, said a spokesman at a press conference.?
"It is unacceptable and we cannot remain silent on this issue," he added.?
In the wake of the deadly explosion, there is a frantic search for survivors. The visuals are scary to watch from miles away so one can understand the terror faced by the locals.? ?
