All 80 people onboard a Delta Air Lines flight had a miraculous escape after the plane flipped over and crashed on the runway of the Toronto airport in Canada. The flight, a Bombardier CRJ900, operated by Endeavor Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, carrying 76 passengers and four crew, was flying from Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota.
The flight was landing on Runway 23 at Toronto Pearson Airport when it flipped upside down, leaving 18 passengers with minor injuries and the aircraft suffering significant damage.
Three people on the flight, including a child, are said to have suffered critical injuries, with 15 others also immediately taken to hospitals, a Canadian air ambulance official said.
Videos posted to social media showed the moment of the crash and the aftermath of the overturn.
Videos also showed passengers climbing out and walking across the tarmac as they were being evacuated.
One of the passengers, John Nelson, posted a video of the aftermath on Facebook, showing a fire engine spraying water on the plane that was lying belly-up on the snow-covered tarmac.
He told CNN there was no indication of anything unusual before landing.
"We hit the ground, and we were sideways, and then we were upside down," Nelson said.
"I was able to just unbuckle and sort of fall and push myself to the ground. And then some people were kind of hanging and needed some help being helped down, and others were able to get down on their own," he said.
While an investigation has been ordered into the crash, initial reports suggest that weather conditions could have played a role in the mishap.
Snow was being blown by winds gusting to 65 kph when the flight attempted to land on a dry runway at around 2:15 p.m.
