Donald Trump, the current President of the United States, has once again hinted at the possibility of serving a third term, despite the constitutional limit. On Sunday, he reiterated his stance, saying he is exploring "ways" to make it possible. His comments have sparked a debate over whether a US President can legally serve beyond two terms.
Speaking to the media, Trump stated, ¡°I am not joking about trying to serve a third term. There are methods which you could do it,¡± as reported by NBC News. His statement has drawn widespread reactions, with legal experts pointing to the US Constitution and social media users questioning his motives.
As per the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1951, no person can be elected as President more than twice. It was introduced after Franklin D. Roosevelt served four consecutive terms from 1933 to 1945, breaking the two-term tradition set by George Washington.
The amendment allows a Vice President who assumes the presidency due to the death or resignation of a sitting President to serve up to 10 years if they take over with less than two years remaining in the original term. However, for Trump to secure a third term legally, the 22nd Amendment would have to be repealed. This would require a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate and ratification by three-fourths of the state legislatures, making it an extremely difficult process.
During a media interaction, Trump was asked whether he might attempt a third term by having Vice President JD Vance elected first and then stepping in later. He responded, ¡°Well, that¡¯s one, but there are others too,¡± but declined to elaborate on his other possible strategies.
¡°I don¡¯t want to talk about a third term now because no matter how you look at it, we¡¯ve got a long time to go,¡± Trump added. He also repeated his claim that the 2020 election was rigged, stating, ¡°I have had more people ask me to have a third term, which in a way is a fourth term because the other election, the 2020 election, was totally rigged.¡±
Trump¡¯s statements have ignited a firestorm on social media, with users divided on the issue. Many have condemned his comments, while some supporters state that he deserves another term.
One user wrote, ¡°Trump seeking a third term would validate every liberal¡¯s position¡ªhe is a self-loathing narcissist who puts himself over the law.¡±?
Another user suggested that former President Barack Obama should step in if Trump attempts to change the Constitution, saying, ¡°Obama should make a public statement declaring that he will be a candidate for president in 2028 if Trump could somehow amend the Constitution to run for a third term.¡±
Others have taken a firm stance against any President serving more than two terms. ¡°Trump¡¯s third term shouldn¡¯t be allowed. No president should get three, IMO,¡± one user stated.
Even some Trump supporters disagreed with his suggestion, with one commenting, ¡°Love Trump¡ but guys, this is a horrible, horrible idea. And something everyone should be very against. You all would be yelling if a Democrat wanted a third term as President. We¡¯re trying to get term and age limits for all politicians, not extend them. Hard pass on this.¡±
Despite the criticism, some users supported Trump¡¯s desire for another term, with one saying, ¡°President Trump should be given a third term to make up for the 2020 stolen election!¡±?
Another user pointed out a potential legal loophole, warning, ¡°Trump already had two terms. If something should happen to JD Vance in his term in office as President, then Donald Trump would be having a third term, and that¡¯s illegal.¡±
While Trump has hinted at ways to extend his presidency, the legal barriers make it almost impossible. The US Constitution would have to be amended, which requires strong support in Congress and across states. Historically, no US President has successfully removed term limits.
However, Trump¡¯s repeated claims about a third term indicate that he might try to test the system. Whether he finds a legal loophole or just uses this idea to keep his supporters engaged, the discussion around his potential third term is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
