The Peel Regional Police in Canada have said that they have not received any direct threats against places of worship amid the growing tensions between Hindus and Sikhs in the city of Brampton. The Peel Regional Police's clarification came after Sikhs For Justice chief, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, issued a statement saying that Indian diplomats will be targeted at Hindu temples on November 16 and 17.??
In a video filmed in Brampton, Pannun also vowed to ¡°shake the foundations of Ayodhya¡± and attack other Hindu temples across Canada. Pannun, a dual US and Canadian citizen, is a wanted terrorist in India.??
"Peel Regional Police are aware of community concerns, particularly at places of worship, regarding demonstrations and perceived threats. Peel Regional Police wish to clarify that we have not received any direct threats against any place of worship in the Region of Peel," the Peel Regional Police said in a statement.??
Following the recent threats, the Peel Regional Police had earlier requested temple authorities to consider "rescheduling" the upcoming event owing to these threats.??
Nishan Duraiappah, Chief of Police with the Peel Regional Police serving Brampton and Mississauga, said the postponement could help in "de-escalating the present tensions" and safeguarding the wellbeing of attendees.??
"We believe that a temporary postponement could contribute meaningfully to de-escalating the present tensions and safeguarding the wellbeing of those attending your location," the letter read.??
At least two Hindu temples, the Triveni Mandir and Kalibari Mandir in Mississauga, which had Consular Camps scheduled for November 16 and 17, have announced the postponement of the events.??
An Indian Consular Camp at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton on November 3 had witnessed a "violent disruption" by pro-Khalistani protesters.
