Israel, which is continuing its ground operations in Lebanon, has reportedly killed another top figure in the Hezbollah ranks. Hassan Jaafar al-Qasir, the son-in-law of Hassan Nasrallah, the slain Hezbollah chief, was killed in an air raid on Thursday at a rescue facility of the Shia militia in central Beirut.
"Hassan Jaafar al-Qasir, the son-in-law of Hassan Nasrallah, was among two Lebanese victims of the Israeli raid which targeted an apartment in a residential building in the Mazze district of Damascus," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The airstrike that killed al-Qasir came hours after Israel acknowledged the death of eight IDF soldiers at the hands of Hezbollah during its ground operations in South Lebanon.
Hezbollah said it forced Israeli soldiers to retreat, targeted an Israeli unit with explosives, and destroyed three Merkava tanks with rockets as they advanced on Maroun al-Ras village.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his condolence message, said, "We are at the height of a difficult war against Iran's Axis of Evil, which wants to destroy us. This will not happen because we will stand together and with God's help, we will win together. We will return our abductees in the south, we will return our residents in the north, we will guarantee the eternity of Israel."
Meanwhile, amid growing concerns over Israel's possible response to the Iranian missile attacks, US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he will not support a strike on sites related to Tehran's nuclear program.
Israel, which had been at war with Hamas in Gaza for nearly a year now, had recently shifted its focus to the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. In less than a month, Israel has managed to cripple Hezbollah's communication and combat network by blowing up their pagers and walkie-talkies. Israel has also eliminated several top Hezbollah leaders, including Nasrallah, who led the militia for three decades.
