"Hurkle-durkling," although it may sound like a contemporary fad, actually stems from an age-old Scottish term denoting the act of lingering in bed when one should be up and about.
The recent resurgence of this concept began with a video shared by Jewish-American actress Kira Kosarin, hailing from New Jersey, last month. Since its inception, the video has garnered nearly 4 million views, captivating audiences with its depiction of this leisurely morning ritual.
In the video, Kosarin elucidates the essence of "Hurkle-Durkle," a practice where individuals choose to remain in bed after waking up. Some opt to sip water by their bedside, while others peruse their smartphones, with some briefly venturing to the bathroom before returning to bed.
Regardless of the specifics, the common thread is the conscious decision to prolong the stay in bed while remaining awake.
However, experts have swiftly intervened to scrutinize this trend, emphasising the paramount importance of substantial change for both physical and mental well-being.
¡°While I hadn¡¯t heard of hurkle-durkle before the trend went viral, I love the concept and think more of us should embrace it,¡± said Marisha Mathis, a licensed clinical social worker with Thriveworks in Raleigh, North Carolina.¡°It¡¯s antithetical to the hustle culture we¡¯re often inundated with that focuses on maximizing every moment of the day,¡± Mathis said.
¡°However, sometimes prioritizing rest and having a slower start to the day is the best way to optimize your time and mental health.¡±She believes the ¡°hurkle-durkle¡± lifestyle can be a healthy form of self-care, as it offers the space to think and simply exist without interruption or pressure.¡°It presents us with the opportunity to get much-needed rest, move at gentler pace and reset to properly approach the morning,¡± Mathis said.
Dr. Yoel Raiter, Director of the Sleep Institute at Hadassah-University Medical Center, warns against the perils of this phenomenon. "Lingering in bed post-wakeup can disrupt the brain's association of the bed with sleep, ultimately fragmenting the sleep cycle," he cautions.
He emphasises the importance of adhering to a consistent sleep schedule and recommends initiating the day promptly, including exposure to natural light to recalibrate our internal clock.
For those inclined to remain cocooned in slumber, it's crucial to be cognizant of the recommended duration of nightly rest. From newborns requiring 14 to 17 hours of sleep to adults needing seven to eight hours, adhering to these guidelines can optimize overall health and well-being.
