Ending weeks of speculations about the Israeli response to an Iranian missile strike, the Jewish state on Saturday carried out what it describes as 'precision strikes' against military targets of the Islamic Republic. According to various reports, at least six explosions were heard around the Iranian capital Tehran in the early hours of Saturday.
"The regime in?Iran?and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since October 7 including direct attacks from Iranian soil. Like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond,¡± Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a statement.
The airstrikes were widely anticipated, but there were speculations for weeks on what Israel could target in Iran. Many had feared that Israel could go after the nuclear or oil infrastructure of Tehran. It was not immediately unclear what exactly were the military targets struck by Israel on Saturday.
Iran¡¯s state-run media acknowledged blasts that could be heard in Tehran and said some of the sounds came from air defense systems around the city.
Saturday's airstrikes inside Iran could further complicate the volatile situation in the region, as Israel is already involved in a multi-front war in Gaza, Lebanon and Iraq targeting Iran-backed pro-Palestinian militant groups.
On October 1, Iran carried out a massive missile attack on Israel, launching around 180 ballistic missiles, most of which were shot down by Israeli air defenses. This was in response to the recent assassinations of top Hamas and Hezbollah leaders by Israel.
