Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been one of the most high-profile supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. In the past few months, the world's richest man has been doing everything within his power to ensure Trump is elected in the US presidential elections scheduled for next month.
Musk, however, is not the only ultra-rich person who has picked a side in the upcoming elections. Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who held the title of the world's richest man for the longest time, has decided to support Trump's opponent, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Gates has reportedly donated about $50 million to Future Forward, a nonprofit supporting Harris' US presidential campaign, The New York Times reported.
According to the report, Gates has not publicly endorsed Harris, and the donation was also kept a private affair, but he had discussed it among peers like former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg.
The report further added that Gates's reason for backing Harris in the November 5 US presidential election was concerns over a second Trump presidency.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the international philanthropic organization he co-founded, is reportedly concerned about potential cuts to family planning and global health programs if Trump is elected again.
Responding to the report, Gates told The New York Times that he is bipartisan and supports candidates with commitments to health care, climate change, and poverty.
He, however, added that despite his history of working with various leaders across the political spectrum, "this election is different."
While Bill has not publicly endorsed Harris, his ex-wife Melinda French Gates has thrown her support behind the incumbent US Vice President.
But in a July interview, Gates had welcomed the prospect of "somebody who's younger, who can think about things like AI" being the Democratic nominee after Biden dropped out of the race.
