Republican candidate for the US Presidential Election in November, Donald Trump, has said that he will be interviewed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk next week. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, a social media platform he founded after the former president was banned by the likes of Facebook and Twitter. "On Monday night, I'll be doing a major interview with Elon Musk. Details to follow," Trump wrote.
The development comes at a time when, for the first time, Trump is projected as trailing behind Democratic rival Kamala Harris in opinion polls.
Among recent opinion polls, SurveyUSA put Harris up three points ahead of Trump, 48%-45%, while Morning Consult put her up four points, 48%-44%. Harris also led in the YouGov and CBS News poll by one point, 50%-49%, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst poll put Harris up three, 46%-43%.
With the Democratic Party campaign re-energised following President Joe Biden's historic decision to step aside and nominate his deputy, Kamala Harris, as the presidential candidate, the Trump camp has slowly lost the edge it had at the beginning of the race.
The Trump campaign, which had heavily focused on Biden's advanced age and concerns over his poor health, is now facing the same heat. At 78 years old, Trump, if elected, would become the oldest president in US history. In contrast, Harris is much younger at 59 years old and has considerable support among young voters.
However, Trump has been drumming up support, even if it means going out of his way.
Recently, Trump was interviewed by live streamer Adin Ross, which reportedly helped the streaming platform 'Kick' break its viewing record.
In the interview, Trump also spoke in favour of TikTok, the Chinese social media platform, against which he had declared war while he was in office.

Trump's upcoming interview, which in all likelihood will be live-streamed on X, is yet another attempt at speaking to his electorate from friendly turf.
Notably, X owner Musk has fully thrown his weight behind the Trump campaign and has been prolifically reposting many posts against the Harris campaign.

Musk has also pledged USD 45 million per month to a new political action committee backing Trump.
