Don Bradman is without a doubt to have ever played the game.
Between 1928 and 1948, he represented Australia in 52 Test matches and accumulated 6,996 runs with an astounding average of 99.94. He scored 29 hundreds in 80 innings. His average remains the best ever in Test history with nobody close.?
But it was not a rosy start. After his Test debut vs England, Bradman got dropped.

His debut was nothing to write home about as he made scores of 18 and 1 and Australia lost by 675 runs.
So when the second Test was played, he was not picked.

But he was back with a vengeance and came back in the third Test with scores of 79 and 112. England still won though.
He was not done yet. The fourth Test saw him make 40 and 58 and the last one had him return with score of 123 and 37 not out.

Australia may have lost 1-4, but a new talent had emerged who would shatter every batting record in the years to come.
6996 runs in 52 Tests and 80 innings with 10 not outs and 29 hundreds. The numbers speak for themselves.
Had he managed to score 4 runs in his final innings he would have finished with an average of exactly 100. But he was out for a duck. However, nobody is even close to him right now.
It is unlikely that anyone shall average 100 in minimum 20 innings and retire from the game, so one can say this record is safely in the bag.
